IOTA24 – Madoda Fani
In 2024 the 2nd Indian Ocean Craft Triennial investigates the multi-various languages codified in contemporary craft. Visit the major international exhibition at six galleries, conference, and over 70 more exhibitions and events across Western Australia.
Bold and emblazoned with character, the ceramic work of Madoda Fani carries a dramatically unique sensibility. Inspired by his African heritage, Fani makes hand-coiled, burnished and smoke-fired pieces that are a contemporary evolution of the traditional ceramics indigenous to Southern Africa. Although he uses traditional techniques, Fani’s curvaceous, coiled forms and hand-carved embellishments are entirely distinct.
This will exhibition will be open from the 10th of August to the 27th of October.
IOTA24 – Jillian Green | The Upholstered Donkey
Step into the whimsical world of The Upholstered Donkey, an enchanting exhibition that brings the charm of the home paddock to life. Featuring intricately woven tapestries interlaced with found objects, this installation draws inspiration from the everyday adventures of two delightful miniature donkeys, Joe Green and Frank Davies. Like all equines, the donkey’s visual perception is dominated by contrast, light, and dark shapes – elements richly depicted in this exhibition.
Born out of the need to protect her donkeys from harsh weather, Jillian Frances Green began weaving with wool, creating shapes of shelter, rugs, and coats that evolved into a soft geometry of occasionally figurative language. Each piece captures the rustic beauty and playful spirit of rural life, transforming ordinary materials into extraordinary art.
“A relationship with donkeys is not unlike a relationship with one’s own art practice, in that it’s an endlessly interesting negotiation with an independent and mysterious ‘other’, at times delightfully cooperative, at times frustratingly opaque and unruly. My art practice has become entwined with my relationship with two young donkeys. I dream of one or the other literally every night, down to the subconscious level I am firmly yoked to both.”
This exhibition will be open from the 10th of August to the 27th of October.
