The Kodja Place is made up of several areas:
Kodj Gallery
This beautiful gallery takes you on a journey from a Noongar-Indigenous creation story to reflections on modern farming, tracing the vastly different ways in which local people have been sustained by this land. The pride of the Gallery’s collection is an authentic kodj, the traditional Noongar axe from which Kojonup and The Kodja Place draw their name.
Australian Rose Maze
Explore Australia’s rose growing heritage and learn the poignant stories of the three women – Yoondi the Noongar, Elizabeth the English and Maria the Italian – whose life stories are entwined into the intricate pathways and pergolas of the maze. Rose lovers will find 100 varieties of Australian-bred roses across 1400 plantings, including Lorraine Lee, Milkmaid, Restless, Pacific Triumph, Carabella, Iced Parfait, Countrywoman, Howard Florey, Onkaparinga and Flinders.Â
The Story Place
From skin-prickling fire stories and amusing farming anecdotes, to a twenty year struggle for citizenship, Kojonup’s Noongar and settler communities bring together their experiences, knowledge and contemporary viewpoints to give this inside story of Australian country life.
Yoondi’s Mia Mia
Visit this special gathering spot at The Kodja Place. The campsite has two mia mia or kornt – bush shelters that were used by traditional Noongars. The site is named after Yoondi, one of the Three Women featured in the story-trails that weave through the Australian Rose Maze. You’ll find small ‘bush pockets’ of local wildflowers and bush tucker plants and get an insight to the rich flora of Kojonup.
Black Cockatoo Cafe
Open seven days a week the cafe is set beside the Australian Rose Maze and courtyard and is ideal for a quick travel-stop or a leisurely break while you explore the amazing stories of The Kodja Place.
