Lighting the Sound | Albany 2026

13–15, 20–22, 27–29 March 2026

As the sun sets on Albany in March 2026, the city will transform into a breathtaking canvas of light. Over three weekends, Lighting the Sound will illuminate Albany’s hills and coastline in what will be the largest light installation ever staged on Earth.

At the heart of this extraordinary event is internationally renowned Finnish artist, Kari Kola, whose visionary work has lit up Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower, and the Connemara Mountains. Now, for the first time, his artistry will touch Australian soil, creating a spectacle inspired by Albany’s landscapes and stories.

This is more than a light show. It’s a story. One shaped by the land and its people. Drawing on the Menang plant, a symbol of resilience and renewal, Kola’s work reflects the deep cultural significance of Albany, weaving together themes of reconciliation, intergenerational knowledge, and connection to place.

Key vantage points across the Albany townsite will offer unique perspectives on this vast illumination, which spans thousands of hectares around King George Sound. It’s a vision so ambitious, it can only be fully understood by standing within it.

Lighting the Sound isn’t just something to see. It’s something to feel. Imagine the glow of light rippling across the water, the hills softly illuminated, and the streets alive with quiet wonder.

This is your chance to be part of history, to witness a moment that will forever be etched into Albany’s story. When the lights go on, where will you be?
