Just remember that some of the region’s wildest places are protected for good reason. Dogs aren’t permitted in most national parks and nature reserves, so check local restrictions before you set out and plan a pet-friendly alternative where needed.

Keep an eye on signage and local restrictions along the way. Some locations require dogs to remain on-lead, while national parks and other conservation areas don’t allow pets due to the risk to native flora and fauna.

Sandy paws encouraged are encouraged here. Because few things beat watching your dog discover a South West beach.
Find stretches of coast where there’s room for a run, a splash and a vigorous shake inconveniently close to you. Nothing beats a water-logged stick and watching the sun drop towards the horizon.
Dog-friendly and designated off-leash areas can be found from Bunbury Geographe right around to the Great Southern, including coastal spots near Margaret River, Augusta, Denmark and Albany. Rules can vary between beaches — and sometimes between different sections of the same beach — so check signage and local advice before unclipping the lead.

Good drinks. Good food. Very good dogs. Being on holiday with your dog doesn’t mean missing out on the South West’s food and drink scene.

From brewery lawns around the Margaret River Region to cafés beside the beach and Great Southern cellar doors among the vines, there’s a drink with a view (and a puppacino) waiting.
Most pet-friendly venues are outdoors and individual policies can change, so it’s worth checking with them directly before arriving – particularly if you’re travelling during busy periods.
