To The Letter

‘To the Letter’ brings together works from the City of Bunbury Art Collection that explore the use of language in visual art. Scribbled, embroidered, stencilled, or etched, text appears here as both subject and strategy, carrying humour, critique, memory, and protest in equal measure. From clever word play to poetic fragments, these works reveal the many roles words can play in an artwork.

Presented alongside exhibitions by John Baldessari and Sam Bloor, ‘To the Letter’ invites viewers to consider how artists engage with text as a powerful tool in contemporary practice.

Although distinctively individual, the three exhibitions — ‘To the Letter’, ‘Futile Gestures’, and ‘Teaching a Plant the Alphabet’ — share common themes of language, signage, and meaning-making, creating a unique dialogue across contemporary and historical practices.
