Understory Art and Nature Trail is an award winning art in nature experience in Northcliffe in Australia’s South West’s Southern Forests & Valleys region. Developed and managed by local community cultural organisation Southern Forest Arts, Understory invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the ancient forest and the creativity of the community living beneath its canopy.
What you will experience
This naturally unique attraction features a 1.2 kilometre walking trail through Northcliffe Forest Park, a conservation reserve with changing vegetation from heathland near town to tall karri forest. Along the trail you will discover site specific artworks integrated into the landscape, encouraging you to slow down, explore and connect with the forest environment.
How to visit
Entry is via the Northcliffe Visitor Centre in the centre of town, making it easy to plan your visit and begin the walk. Allow at least one hour to enjoy the full experience and take extra care in wet weather as boardwalk sections can be slippery. Pets are not permitted on the trail.
Understory Community Café
Complete your visit with a stop at the Understory Community Café, a community first social enterprise run by Southern Forest Arts. The café operates as a pop up café and mobile coffee van and is often located behind the Northcliffe Visitor Centre, with additional appearances at local markets and community events. Enjoy great coffee and homemade food while supporting local employment, skills development and community participation in Northcliffe and the Southern Forests & Valleys region.
