7 Memorable Experiences for a Cosy Albany Winter Weekend

Winter arrives softly in Albany (Kinjarling), carried on salt air and slow mornings. It’s the season for lingering. Coffee pressed warmly between your hands and the landscape feels closer, more intimate somehow.

Who said winter weekends were meant to be spent at home? Here, the coast hums with quiet energy. Cloud hangs low over the coastline, galleries glow, and cosy cafes welcome you in from the cold. There’s comfort in every corner and yes, your favourite beanie fits right in.

We’ve gathered seven experiences to shape a memorable Albany winter weekend. Think local culture shared through exhibitions and festivals. Wild places waiting just beyond the town’s edge. Long, unhurried tastings that capture the flavours of the Great Southern.

Come see what waits in the stillness of winter.

1. Albany 2026 events

Albany is hosting Western Australia’s first bicentenary in 2026, acknowledging the first place where Aboriginal and British people commenced living together on the western side of Australia. Your Albany winter getaway might just lead you to one of its standout events from its year-long program of exhibitions, performances and community experiences.

Kalyagul: Connections to Menang Country

Kalyagul invites you into the enduring connection between Menang people and Country, where land, sea, and sky are deeply intertwined. Through shared knowledge, the exhibition reveals how the understanding of this place was shaped across cultures.

Objects, artworks and voices come together in quiet conversation. It’s a space of reflection, where past and present meet, and the story continues, always.

Albany Is:

Launching in the middle of the year, Albany Is is an app-based immersive audio experience that draws on more than 170 recorded interviews to create something available on the phone you carry in your pocket. Part oral history, part interactive podcast, the app invites listeners to walk through Albany and hear the region narrated by the people who know it best. From Menang Elders whose connection to this Country stretches back tens of thousands of years, to post-war migrants who built new lives from the ground up, to teenagers figuring out what this place means to them right now. The final experience features interactive episode that listeners can navigate at their own pace.

Binalup Menang: First Light, First People

Binalup Menang is an invitation to pause and recognise the enduring presence of First Nations people shaping Kinjarling today.

This powerful portrait series by award-winning photographer Nic Duncan honours Menang Elders and emerging leaders, capturing strength, resilience, and deep cultural connection. Through each image and voices, rich lived experiences are shared with honesty and care.

Kaarla Wirren: Fire Spirit

As darkness falls, the fire begins to speak. Kaarla Wirren (Fire Spirit) is a one-night performance beneath the open sky, where flame, movement, and story come together. Led by Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen, it brings local young people and fire artists into a shared expression of resilience, and invites the audience to experience the enduring power of coming together around fire.

2. The National Anzac Centre

Perched above the waters of King George Sound, the National Anzac Centre invites a quiet kind of reflection. Get to know the stories from those who served during the First World War. As you move through the space, you’re drawn into the lives behind the uniforms. Their hopes, their courage, their sacrifice. Outside, the wind carries across the coastline, as if holding memory in its breath. It’s a place to pause, to learn, and to reflect on the legacy that shaped our world of today.

3. Albany’s Historic Whaling Station

Step into a layered past shaped by industry, ocean, and change. As you wander through the preserved grounds, stories of a time when the sea was both livelihood and frontier. Today, it’s a place of learning, offering insight into how perspectives have shifted towards conservation and care for marine life. Among the buildings, exhibitions bring new voices and stories into the space. Get lost for a few hours, there’s more waiting to be discovered than first meets the eye.

4. Visit to The Gap and Natural Bridge

Take a stroll along the coastline and discover Mother Nature’s artistry at The Gap and Natural Bridge. Here, wind and water have shaped the land over millennia, carving deep channels and sculpting ancient granite into sweeping forms. Stand above the surging sea and feel its power: waves rolling, crashing, endlessly in motion below. Here, nature speaks in elements: wild, enduring, and deeply alive.

5. Whisky Tasting at Limeburners

Slip away from the occasional winter showers and into the warm embrace of Limeburners. Here, time slows to the gentle ritual of tasting the rich and smoky notes unfolding with every sip. Join a guided distillery tour to uncover the craft behind each bottle. For something more hands-on, the gin blending class invites you to create your own, guided by botanicals and instinct.

6. Dinner at one of the cosy restaurants

As the evening cools, Albany’s dining scene opens its doors to a collection of cosy restaurants. Each of them offering their own expression of local flavour.

Kirby’s Atelier de Cuisine invites slow, thoughtful fine dining on Friday evenings, where seasonal produce is elevated with care and creativity. Expect dishes that feel refined yet grounded, each one utilising premium local produce.

Sotao brings a vibrant warmth to the table. Their dishes layer spices and textures into share-style plates designed to be savoured together.

Majuba Bistro feels like a quiet celebration of the region itself. The dishes are built from the finest local ingredients, with a sense of care in every detail. All flavours are paired to the wines poured alongside, each one taking you to nearby vineyards and the land they came from.

You might find yourself drawn to Six Degrees, a lively meeting place where the rhythm of Albany flows in and out the doors. It’s relaxed and social, with a menu of hearty, flavourful dishes that suit an easy, casual evening spent in good company.

As morning returns, Dylans is there to welcome you in. Think comforting breakfast favourites, ocean views, and that first, much-needed coffee warming your hands as the day gently begins.

7. Winter Festival

Round out your weekend by stepping into the rhythm of Albany’s festival spirit. Experience two festivals in July, each bringing its own rhythm, and connection to the sea.

The Albany International Folk ‘n’ Shanty Festival fills the streets with song. You will hear the voices rising in unison and fiddles dancing through the air, with this year’s theme being the music, magic and mischief of Ireland. It’s lively, heartfelt, and wonderfully contagious.

Alongside it, the Maritime Festival unfolds across the month, celebrating the town’s deep connection to the ocean. You will find art, music, markets, and immersive experiences for everyone to enjoy. Explore and be part of something that continues to shape this place… with just a hint of seafaring mischief along the way.

This is your cosy winter weekend, gently mapped out. A collection of moments waiting to be stepped into.

Stories shared through exhibitions and voices. Windswept coastlines captured in passing photographs. Perhaps a bottle of local whisky tucked into your suitcase, waiting to be opened later as you reminisce about evenings spent gathered around good food.

You might follow it exactly, or let the days unfold in your own way. Either way, Albany is ready, holding space for your cosy winter weekend that lingers long after you’ve left.
